Effects of Varieties and Topping –Pruning Techniques on the Growth and Yield of Kale (Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala) Grown on Coconut Coir Substrate
Abstract
The study was conducted to determine the effects of combining kale varieties with topping - pruning techniques to enhance leaf yield. The experiment followed a two-factor factorial design with five replications. Factor A included four kale varieties: green Curly, purple Curly, green Seaweed, and purple Seaweed. Factor B involved four toppings: no topping, topping with two shoots retained, topping with three shoots retained, and topping with natural shoot growth. Results showed that the Green Curly variety produced the highest leaf yield per plant among the tested varieties. The treatment involving topping and allowing shoots to grow naturally increased the number of harvestable leaves per plant but reduced individual leaf size compared to the no-topping treatment. However, this approach led to improvements in leaf brix level, dry matter content, and vitamin C concentration.
