Mục đích của nghiên cứu này là tìm hiểu có hay không (nếu có) và làm thế nào sự khác biệt trong đặc điểm của doanh nghiệp (DN) và hoàn cảnh có ảnh hưởng đến sự khác biệt về tiêu cực phí (hối lộ) của doanh nghiệp ởđồng bằng sông Cửu Long - Việt Nam. Trong bài báo này, tác giảđã giải thích tại sao các doanh nghiệp chịu ảnh hưởng bởi tác lực (bên trong và bên ngoài) phải thanh toán tiêu cực phí nhiều hơn các doanh nghiệp khác. Các nhân tố bên ngoài bao gồm mức độ cảm nhận về cạnh tranh và mức độ cảm nhận về chất lượng của chính quyền. Các nhân tố bên trong bao gồm quy mô và tuổi tác doanh nghiệp (thời gian hoạt động sản xuất kinh doanh). Dựa trên bộ số liệu ở cấp độ DN, tác giả tìm thấy đặc điểm DN (tuổi, quy mô) có ảnh hưởng đến xác suất thanh toán tiêu cực phí. Tương tự, sự khác biệt trong môi trường kinh doanh (mức độ cạnh tranh, chất lượng của chính quyền) có ảnh hưởng đến xác suất thanh toán tiêu cực phí của doanh nghiệp.
