Abstract

The rotifer Brachionus plicatilis is an important live food in aquaculture seed production. This study was carried out to determine the optimal harvest percentage in biomass culture of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis in order to achieve the highest production and population recovery capacity. The rotifers were fed baker’s yeast combined with the rotifer feed Selco S. Parkle (INVE, Belgium), and a commercial probiotic was added daily. The experiment consisted of four treatments: no harvest (NT1-ĐC), 10% harvest (NT2-10), 20% harvest (NT3-20), and 30% harvest (NT4-30), each with three replicates. The results showed that rotifer density growth and population recovery were strongly affected by the harvest percentage. The highest density and population growth rate were recorded in the 10% harvest treatment, with a peak density of 893.3 ± 126.6 individuals/mL, which was three times higher than that of the no-harvest treatment. These results confirm that applying a daily harvest rate is necessary to optimize the production of Brachionus plicatilis.
