Abstract

This paper reports the results of a study investigating the factors influencing Vietnamese EFL students’ willingness to communicate. The study involved first-year non-English majors at Can Tho University. Adopting a mixed-methods approach, the study integrated semi-structured interviews with 10 students and a questionnaire administered to 172 students. The findings revealed that all influential factors had scores slightly above average, with statistically significant differences between the two gender groups. In addition, students’ willingness to speak was constrained by personal factors, such as social apprehension, low confidence, and limited language proficiency. The external facilitators included friendly teachers and peers, a cooperative learning environment, and appropriate tasks and activities, particularly pre-activity preparation. The study provides valuable insights and implications for teachers to tailor their instruction to encourage greater communication in class, thereby ensuring effective practice.
