Abstract

Seafood processing is an industry contributing to food supply for local consumption, domestic markets, and export. However, wastewater from seafood processing contains a high amount of organic compounds such as lipids, which should be properly treated to avoid environmental pollution. From wastewater samples collected at a shrimp and catfish processing factory, 19 lipid-degrading bacterial isolates were obtained, of which LF2, LF4, LS3, and LS4 exhibited the highest lipase activity at 48 hours of cultivation in minimal medium supplemented with 1% sunflower oil. The isolate LS4 showed the highest lipase activity under neutral pH conditions (47.19 U/mL). Sequence analysis of the 16S-rRNA gene and biochemical characterization of LS4 confirmed that the isolate belongs to Aeromonas hydrophila and was designated as Aeromonas hydrophila LS4.
